Lower Face and Neck Aging, When a Facelift, a Neck Lift, or Both Makes Sense

Lower Face and Neck Aging is one of the most common reasons patients ask about the difference between a facelift and a neck lift, and whether they should consider one procedure, the other, or both. This question comes up frequently because Lower Face and Neck Aging often happens gradually, and the changes can look similar on the surface even when the underlying causes are very different.

The most important step in choosing the right approach is identifying which areas are actually affected by Lower Face and Neck Aging. There is no single answer that applies to everyone, and treatment should never be based on age alone. What matters most is where the laxity, tissue descent, and contour changes are occurring.

Some patients present with heaviness in the lower face, particularly in the jowls, while still maintaining a tight neck angle and minimal loose skin beneath the chin. In these cases, Lower Face and Neck Aging is primarily concentrated along the jawline rather than the neck, and a lower facelift may be the most appropriate solution. A lower facelift addresses sagging below the cheekbones, improves jawline definition, and lifts the skin and underlying muscle upward and backward to restore a more youthful contour to the lower face.

Other patients present quite differently. Their lower face may still appear youthful, with little to no jowling, but they are bothered by changes in the neck. This can include loose skin, muscle laxity, or what many patients describe as a turkey wattle. In these situations, Lower Face and Neck Aging is more isolated to the neck, and a neck lift alone may be sufficient. A neck lift typically involves incisions around the ears and tightening of the muscle and skin beneath the chin and along the sides of the neck, without altering the lower face.

While these individual scenarios do occur, the most common presentation involves Lower Face and Neck Aging in both the lower face and the neck. These patients often have a combination of jowling, loss of jawline definition, and sagging skin in the central neck. In these cases, combining a facelift and a neck lift may provide the most natural and balanced outcome, because both regions are treated together to restore harmony.

Addressing only one area while leaving the other untreated can sometimes make the untreated area more noticeable. Additionally, recovery time for treating both areas together is often similar to treating just one area alone. For many patients, a combined approach offers a more comprehensive correction without significantly increasing downtime.

These are the types of discussions that take place during consultation. The goal is not to apply a standard procedure, but to carefully evaluate how Lower Face and Neck Aging is showing up in your anatomy and recommend an approach that restores balance while preserving natural facial proportions and expression.
